Work for your charge, for a change

powerpump

Charging a dead or dying phone battery via the go-to outlet method begets the burning of ye olde dinosaurs, not to mention the guilt and inconvenience that come along for the ride. Companies like Gotwind want to help us to stop drinking the proverbial fossil fuel Kool-Aid by offering more planet-friendly ways to juice up. Since 2006, Gotwind has invented devices that offer perks like instant charge gratification and outlet emancipation, and harness all the energy they need from the wind or non-lazy people.I’m all about the new Orange Power Pump that requires you to work your quads and calves until you’re phone turns back on. With the addition of a small attached turbine, the concept is directly borrowed from pumps used to manually blow up air mattresses for camping, which is perfect for the Power Pump’s debut audience, music lovers who will camp out at the upcoming Glastonbury Festival in June.

dancecharge

Most of these happy campers are bound hit up the dance floor at some point and Gotwind even has a way to capitalize off those funky moves. An earlier invention, a “dance charger” (also for Orange), comes in the form of an armband that collects kinetic energy while the dancer moves, shakes, and gyrates, thanks to a tiny generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. Although they may not be as vigorous, other popular bodily movements such as walking, jogging, or aerobics will also grant you talk time.

chillncharge

Should concert-goers feel especially tired or social, they can rest their legs while reviving their phones by visiting the Orange Chill ‘n’ Charge tent. It’s just like Gotwind’s Recharge Pod Mk2, which debuted at last year’s Glastonbury Festival (also as the LG Skycharger at CES earlier this year) as the world’s first freestanding Renewable Energy mobile phone charging station. The similar Chill ‘n’ Charge tent will use a wind turbine to charge up to 600 phones at a time. Along with free internet and live music, eco-conscious multi-taskers and over-stimulation junkies will surely be pleased.

Ben Jandrell launched Gotwind in 2006 as a personal website to share his passion for renewable energy as well as his DIY experiments and projects. The company has since quickly grown to be an authority on alternative energy solutions, garnering interest from corporations and individuals from around the world.
