GIY: Grow It Yourself
First there was the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) movement for those who wanted to save money and make things themselves for their home. Now there’s a new movement afoot, Grow-It-Yourself (GIY), for those who want to grow their own food. It’s hard to farm in the city, but it is possible to grow your own vegetables in your condo. Here’s a group of appliances that can help you GIY.

The Lightpot by Shulab Studio is a planter that has a lamp overhead, growing from the centre of the plant. The light highlights the greenery, so it is an ideal accessory for any dark corner.

Italian appliance maker Smeg is the maker of the Home Garden, an indoor green house. Fresh herbs and flowers can be grown in this remote-controlled, climate controlled, glass enclosed artificial environment. Created in conjunction with Piano Design, the Home Garden has it’s own light source to complement natural light, controlled water vapor release for humidity, time-based temperature control (ie., cooler at night), and synthetic resin pots with holes for drainage that leads to a special collector.

The AeroGarden PRO200 uses “microprocessor-controlled Adaptive Growth Intelligence” to monitor plant growth from germination through advanced growth. The system can instantly adjust water, nutrients and lights to give plants what they need at each stage of growth, thus maximizing yields.

Unfortunately just a prototype, Kleber Puchaski’s Hydrosphere is a small greenhouse solution for growing fresh herbs and salads. A grow lamp is positioned in the middle bottom of the clear glass globe which allows herbs and small fruits to grow around it.
