Bobble” Portable Water Bottle by Karim Rashid Filters Tap Water

Even the most environmentally conscious of us have found ourselves tempted to quench our thirst by buying (gasp!) bottled water when we’re out and about and can’t find a place to fill up on clean, drinkable H2O. So wouldn’t it be wonderful if your reusable bottle could also purify tap water from your office, gym or public water fountain, making it infinitely easier for you to avoid purchasing costly and wasteful plastic bottles? Well, that’s exactly what Bobble does — it’s a reusable water bottle with a built-in water filter. Conceived by product design mastermind Karim Rashid, the colorful, modern Bobble is made of recycled plastic, and if that doesn’t impress you, maybe the $9.95 price tag will! This is a great example of smart design — solving a ubiquitous problem that plagues us all.

The Bobble was designed in direct response to the problems associated with bottled water — Americans purchase over $17 billion dollars worth of bottled water per year and a staggering 1.5 million barrels of oil are used to make the plastic bottles it comes in. It also aims to break down the obstacles that block people from making the switch to reusable bottles. When faced with the choice between buying a bottle of trusted water or drinking from a possibly suspect water source, a lot of people opt for bottled at a cost to themselves and to the environment. The beauty of the Bobble is that it eliminates that barrier by giving people the best of both worlds – pure, safe water with no plastic bottles to throw away!

In perfect keeping with Karim Rashid’s amorphous, blobular and often rainbow-hued aesthetic, the Bobble’s carbon filters are curvy and come in six different colors. In addition to being recycled, reusable, stylish and totally affordable, the Bobble is totally PVC and BPA-free. It’s also made in the good old US of A, meaning that its carbon footprint is already significantly less than if it were to be shipped over from somewhere like China where similar products are manufactured.

Just like other, more pricey filters, the Bobble removes chlorine and organic contaminants from tap water, although the website clearly states that the filter shouldn’t be expected to work on water of questionable quality (read: your local pond). The Bobble’s filter is guaranteed to output about 250 bottles of water, and thinking about how much oil we can avoid using if everyone got one of these babies truly “bobbles” the mind.

These seem like an awesome alternative to SIGG bottles! Cheaper and more useful!

But do we need something to filter the public water, Is it not just as good as the bottled water, or even better? Maybe I'm missing something here.

Steve this is for third world countries where public water is anything but potable…

Bobble? Portable Water Bottle by Karim Rashid Filters Tap Water ……

What you have to worry about in underdeveloped countries is disease – dysentery, giardia, etc. and disease agents like protozoa and parasites. It doesn't look like the bobble eliminates these – not sufficient for remote travel.

The most discouraging aspect to the bottled water v. tap water debate is the invisible barrier to access that people perceive when trying to stay hydrated while out and about. Asking a stranger to refill your reusable bottle in a shop or restaurant can be awkward and unnerving for many people, especially when a simple alternative is readily available in the form of a disposable bottle of spring water. Social discomfort swiftly trumps individual enviro-impact. We've actually been developing and delivering a community-based initiative to help rectify this issue. Using our website (bluew.org) and smart phone application, we work in partnership with municipalities, local businesses and conservation groups to provide online mapped details on where to find clean, free sources across the nation to refill your reusable bottle without feeling compelled to make any additional purchases. We’re working hard to give people barrier-free access to clean, healthy tap water while out of their homes.

Perfect for camping or at a festival!

Such a great idea, but they need to show shipping costs before entering all that info. I think they are stuck in the 90's!

After 250 bottles of water through the filter, is it replaceable?
Or do we have to buy a complete, new Bobble, with it's own manufacturing footprint?
The Bobble *is* still plastic, and is still (although apparently "recycled"), ultimately dependent upon oil consumption.
And it clearly does not address the problem Martin Calisto and "guest" brought up, of use where local water is badly contaminated.
In the US, most of the problem people have with municipal water is taste, from chlorine, chloramines, residual salinity and minerals, etc. In general, city water here is all potable.

saddest part of this bottle is how terrible it is to use!!! You can barely suck the water out… and the plastic creases from the first use… here's an up close look at it in person: http://www.notcot.com/archives/2010/08/water-bobb...
